Railroading ‘Round the Mountain
The railroad was a major element that helped to build the Mt. Shasta area opening the area to miners, lumbermen, settlers, and tourism.
Spas in the area, already known for their unique and healing waters, flourished thanks to the advent of the railroad as more people were able to come here to "take the waters".
What you will see in our railroad exhibit:
Experience the trains through our interactive railroad diorama, including functional trains, cows that moo and sheep that baa.
See and touch an actual railroad hand car. These were used to work on sections of the railroad track, and were operated by pumping the hand bar. It was hard work to make the hand car go!
Go inside a train station with its telegraph office, and the station office. Telegraphs were the only way to send messages fast (like text messages today)!
See photos from 1887 to the present, showing life and work on the rails.
Read about the terrible derailment and spill that threatened our river.
Drive a train! Experience it for yourself. Inside the train station office, you can sit in a big chair with all the gauges and dials from a real locomotive. Using the video and the controls, guide the train down the tracks.
